Hi Mark, Mike, Wendii and MT community,
I have a question regarding the use of nicknames, in my case an abridged form of my name, and the appropriateness of using it within a professional context.
My given name is Andrew, but everyone (who knows me) has called me Drew since before I can remember. (As such, it's quite easy to identify sales calls on the phone.) However, my resume (business cards, etc) are still topped with "Andrew" out of a sense or notion that this is mandated, despite the fact that I only use my full name when legally obliged. I'm guessing that Mark and Mike may have similar experience.
Getting to my point, I would prefer to use 'Drew' as my professional name of sorts, but is it appropriate to do so?
It seems more effective and efficient than starting every interview or introduction by clarifying my name preference to the other party.
Are there any compelling reasons not to do this, other than the confusion of seeing my full name on a document of some kind and being temporarily confused?
Thanks in advance for your helpful advice and suggestions,
Drew R

Drew,
I'm in a similar situation. I use Tim all the time and there is no problem with this. Nicknames are a different matter altogether.
Tim (Becasue only my mother calls me Timothy and that's when I'm in trouble)
Interesting you should ask...
Wendii isn't my real name. It is the name that everyone knows me by and it's the name on everything official apart from my birth certificate, my passport and my driving licence.
Yes - there have been moments of confusion when I've had to tell people that this isn't my real name (airline tickets have to be booked in the name in your passport for example) but it's never caused me any problems - I could change it by deed poll relatively easily but I've never bothered.
Working in HR I found that there's loads of people who don't go by their given names. I'd say it's no big deal.
Wendii

I often see this type of thing in business cards. I father's given name was John but he was addressed by and responded to "Jack". On business cards and other documents he was listed as;
John (Jack) Simmons
Steve Simmons
