How to communicate effectively with someone who has a mixed DISC profile

As well as the common MTDISC profiles D, I, S and C, some people have a mixed profile - meaning their natural behaviors align with more than one of these categories. Most commonly, these are D/I, I/S, S/C and D/C, although D/S’s and I/C’s are possible too.

One of the most frequent questions we receive is: “How do you communicate with someone who has a combination profile? Should we treat them as an I or as an S?” Though the answer is, “it depends”, figuring out the right answer isn’t that difficult.
